[RDV4] Mandatory upgrade bootloader ? / Specs infos

Hi all,

I have bought a new proxmark3 RDV4 and I am in the proces of setting it up. The USB connectivity on my Kali is good so far, and so I have flashed the OS and it worked fine.

I now have the following results for command 'hw version'

proxmark3> hw version
Prox/RFID mark3 RFID instrument
bootrom: Version information not available
os: master/v3.1.0-139-g3fb6e1f-suspect 2019-10-15 14:07:43
fpga_lf.bit built for 2s30vq100 on 2015/03/06 at 07:38:04
fpga_hf.bit built for 2s30vq100 on 2019/03/20 at 08:08:07
SmartCard Slot: available

uC: AT91SAM7S512 Rev A
Embedded Processor: ARM7TDMI
Nonvolatile Program Memory Size: 512K bytes. Used: 205719 bytes (39%). Free: 318569 bytes (61%).
Second Nonvolatile Program Memory Size: None
Internal SRAM Size: 64K bytes
Architecture Identifier: AT91SAM7Sxx Series
Nonvolatile Program Memory Type: Embedded Flash Memory

I have a few questions about these infos :
1. Do I need to flash the bootloader ? As it can brick the proxmark3, I'd prefer not to if it is not mandatory ...
2. The uC detected is AT91SAM7S512 but on the RDV4 spec it is supposed to be SAM7S512. Is that normal ?
3. Same question for external memory : 2mb external memory are supposed to be on board of the RDV4 but they don't appear here. Is that normal ?

Thanks a lot for your answers,

I, work with github RfidResearchGroup/proxmark3/.You have a problem with bootrom( Version information not available)
read the doc /proxmark3/doc.

Good-evening .

Re: [RDV4] Mandatory upgrade bootloader ? / Specs infos

Regarding your questions:

  1. No. Flashing the bootloader is usually only required if you change to another fork (like the RRG repository)

  2. Yes, this is normal. The spec uses an abbreviated type name.

  3. Yes. The official repository doesn't support the RDV4 additional memory yet. In order to continue to support the older hardware revisions, this will probably not change as long as there are still 300k/44k unused flash memory in all 512k/256k hardware revisions.

Re: [RDV4] Mandatory upgrade bootloader ? / Specs infos

In order to get the most out of your RDV4,  you would need to install the RRG/Iceman repo.
https://github.com/RfidResearchGroup/proxmark3.   Try read the docs if you feel unsure how.

1. When changing to RRG/Iceman repo you nowdays must flash bootrom.
2. Its the same chip.
3. Once you have RRG/Iceman repo installed on your device you can look at the extra memory with hw status.
When the client starts, you are seeing the builtin memory of the ARM chip presented,  since there is are some models of the SAM7S chip with different memory sizes.
